How You Look and Talk Matters

I often hear from young professionals who feel that the older generation can be overly critical about how people dress and speak. While personal expression and authenticity are important, it’s essential to recognize that most workplaces are truly multi-generational environments. Older colleagues often hold more power and influence, and their perceptions of your presentation—both in appearance and communication—can have a real impact on your professional growth.

Think of your work attire as a kind of “uniform.” It’s less about stifling your individuality and more about conveying  stability, respect, and professionalism. Personally, I stick to a consistent formula—dark pants and blue shirts—but I show my individuality through a wide range of shoes. I encourage young professionals to take a similar approach: keep your core wardrobe neutral and polished. Then, choose one area—like eyeglasses, shoes, or socks—to showcase your personality. This balance helps you stay professional while still feeling authentic.

The way you speak is equally important. Overusing filler words, slang, or simplistic, repetitive phrases can give the impression that you’re not yet prepared to be taken seriously by senior colleagues. Instead, aim to use precise language, incorporate relevant technical terms, and express your thoughts with clarity and confidence. The right language can set you apart, showing that you’re not just participating but truly contributing to the conversation.

My advice? Embrace the reality that how you look and talk matters.  View your appearance and communication style as tools for building trust, credibility, and respect in a professional setting. By continually refining these aspects, you’ll position yourself to succeed in a multi-generational workplace and make a positive, lasting impression.
