Limit Yourself to Two Drinks.

Limit yourself to two drinks

Professional events with a social twist—like dinners, company parties, or outings with colleagues and clients—can feel like casual occasions, but don’t be fooled. If the company is paying, it’s still a work event, and how you conduct yourself matters.

Alcohol consumption in these settings is a bigger issue than many people realize. Even in an era of increased awareness around excessive drinking and the inappropriate behavior it can lead to, such incidents still occur far too often, damaging careers and reputations along the way.

Here’s my rule: never have more than two drinks. Some people choose not to drink at all, which is a perfectly respectable choice. I personally enjoy a drink or two in these settings, but I’m also mindful that crossing the line into impaired judgment is a mistake.

My advice?Either skip the alcohol altogether or limit yourself to two alcoholic beverages at any professional event. It’s a simple safeguard that keeps your composure, professionalism, and reputation intact. You—and your future self—will be glad you did.
